In ancient Greek mythology, Medusa was one of the most beautiful woman. Men would fall in love instantly from one glance. Her great beauty would make you feel paralyzed, unable to move as you gazed upon her. She eventually was turned into a monster with the ability to turn her victims into stone with the use of eye contact.
A beautiful monster…
In present day our modern Medusa is the “Thirst Trap.” Instead of using eye contact to turn their victims into stone, the modern day Medusa uses the Internet. She uses a combination of photos and status/tweets to lure her victims in one by one.
I’ve witnessed many of my peers both men and women fall into the thirst trap. Some have recovered, others barely survived and a few are no longer with us. May they rest in peace.
I myself nearly lost my foot to a thirst trap. On Twitter a very attractive female posted a picture with the caption, “This is me waking up. Boy do I look like a mess.” Now my natural reaction because I’m a gentlemen was to uplift her spirits by replying, “You are naturally beautiful. Even in the morning.” The moment I said that I felt a sharp pain and a clamp on my ankle. Lo and behold it was a bear trap!
The thirst trap comes in various forms. Mostly on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Women naturally enjoy attention from both genders. Their insecurities put them in a position of doing the following:
- The I’m lonely and wish I had someone to cuddle :( status/tweet. I call that one the quick sand trap.
- The picture with captions as followed: This is me waking up, me bored, me with no make up, or the new one recently added to the list, me… no filter. The pool full of piranhas trap.
- Facebook/Instagram profiles where 90% of their photos are self portraits. The 1000 ways to die trap.
- The infamous standing in front of the mirror doing what I believe to be a facial impersonation of a duck while poking their butt out in the air. A very bizarre trap. The Black Swan.Females enjoy the 50 plus likes on their photos, the comments and the satisfaction of seeing their followers at a 100,000 and only following 10 people. The more Medusa traps, the better she feels about herself. Their aurora becomes as radiant as the sun. This is an example of one of the five Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, esteem. The need for self-respect and self-esteem.
The only tip I can provide from personal experiences to my peers both men and women is to be cautious. No matter how beautiful and charming Medusa may be, put your guard up. If you don’t, you shall be turned into stone and used as a gnome in her garden.Keep in mind I’m not saying women are the only ones who are a Medusa. There are males out there that do the same. Some worse than females. I myself have set up traps in my college years. Now that I look back I wasn’t shit. I’m still ain’t shit, but I’m growing.
My personal opinion on this type of person is that I can’t take them serious. If you soley rely on thirst traps to feel good about yourself, then it comes to show the only thing interesting about you is your looks. Especially if 90% of your photos are of yourself and the other 10% is food, accessories and clothing. There has to be more to you right?
Attention seekers both male and female in my eyes have a lot of growing up to do. The question is when will that happen when in today’s day and age more and more people are putting delays on becoming an adult.
